Dr. Richard Jones is Chief Scientist at The Distillery Pty Ltd, a small Canberra based software company. He brings to this role over 30 years experience of commercial research and development in IT, both in the UK and in Australia.
In the 1970s, while working for the UKAEA at Harwell Laboratory he was involved in the early R&D and product development of intelligence and case management systems; including the first intelligence system installed successfully in Scotland Yard.
From 1984, as Chief Scientist for Computer Power Group in Australia, he was responsible for developing ground-breaking technology in information retrieval, summarisation and automatic keywording, leading to successful development of commercial products.
Richard graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1966 with a 1st Class Honours degree in Mathematics. His PhD was in General Relativity theory, including the development of an early algebraic manipulation software program.
Richard was a member of the Expert Panel in Physical Sciences and Engineering of the Cooperative Research Centre Program from 1997 to 2003. In 1996, he was a member of ARC Strategic Review of IT Research. In 1995 he chaired the Australian Research Council Review Board into the outcomes of Research grants in Computer Science.
He is an investment partner in A&B Ventures, the leading Australian venture capital company, and is a member of the advisory group for their Emerging Technology Fund.
